Unity, Hard Work and Classic Cambodian Flavours for International Women’s Day

A natural love of cooking unites our ambassador chefs from Malis in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. That and the deep satisfaction that comes from feeding a group of people with food that they love. “That really makes me happy, and sometimes I smile alone,” says Phary Minh, one of our Commis III chefs in Siem Reap.

Srey Pov Chea, a Senior Sous Chef at Malis in Phnom Penh, is also tremendously proud to be a part of Luu Meng’s team working hard to promote Cambodian food both here and abroad. “I enjoy reading the reviews from our guests. Without their honest feedback we could not improve ourselves to be better chefs and together with my team, we keep learning and improving our skills to offer our guest the greatest dining experience,” she says.

She is also deeply concerned with the benefits this can bring, not only for Cambodian culture, but also for helping many Cambodians to find work that is a source of pride for themselves and for the country.

Both women first learned to cook at home with their mothers and took a lot of responsibility for what they did. “My mother always told me, ‘keep focused on what you are doing, and make it great’,” says Phary. “I always remember her advice”.

For both women though, while their work has given them pride and happiness, it has also given them independence and the confidence to overcome some of the challenges that life has brought.

“I really enjoy working at Malis as I can give my mother and family a better life and a better future. I have met a lot of difficulties in life and I never give up to now,” says Phary, adding “Keep fighting to make your dreams come true”.

Srey Pov agrees with the value of working hard in order to make your own dreams come true, but also to create a wider benefit for all. “My message to the next generation is to study and be a loyal employee. The more you do, the more you can learn and know. This way, you can become a shining star with great value as a human being to your family, company and society”.

You will be able to taste the delicious fruits of Srey Pov’s and Phary’s hard work this International Women’s Day, thanks to special menus they have worked on crafting with their teams. Each menu reflects the rich flavours and diversity of Cambodian cuisine, the only question is how can one diner fit in both on the same day.
